Brief Book Review

"Designing The User Interface: Strategies for Effective human-computer Interaction"
5th Edition, Ben Shneiderman & Catherine Plaisant, Addison-Wesley, 2009 606 pages. ISBN 13:978-321-53735-5.

With computer and user interface technologies evolving fast, writing about interaction design is a challenging task. It is even more difficult to keep the content updated. Ben Shneiderman and Catherine Plaisant made this undertaking possible by publishing the 5th edition of this book. By updating the content to reflect today’s technologies and providing numerous color examples, screen shots, and data tables along with an easy to read and understand text, this new edition is perfect reading material for all categories of interested people involved in the Human-Computer Interaction field, and particularly for software engineering students or professionals willing to learn about interaction design.

"Designing The User Interface" includes 4 parts. Part 1 provides an overview of usability and theories and guidelines in interaction design. The two chapters of Part 2 are dedicated to the design process and interface evaluation. The five chapters of Part 3 extensively cover interaction styles. Finally, Part 4, under "design issues", covers a variety of topics from documentation to visualization of information.

The book offers extensive online resources for students and instructors. Thus, it is an excellent choice for a text book especially for HCI courses offered to computer engineering students.

A.M.
