HCII 2024: Conference details

HCI International 2024, scheduled to take place at the Washington Hilton Hotel, Washington DC, USA, 29 June - 4 July 2024, cordially invites you to participate and contribute to this major international forum for the dissemination and exchange of up-to-date scientific information on theoretical and applied areas of HCI.

The Conference has a long-established tradition of inviting distinguished scientists and professionals in the broader HCI field to organize parallel sessions. Prospective authors should submit their proposal upon invitation from a session organizer. The process is open until 2 February 2024 (under the guidance of Parallel Session Organizers).

Important deadlines:

HCII2024 will run as a 'hybrid' conference. The first three days of the conference (29 June -1 July) will comprise ‘virtual only’ parallel sessions for paper presentations with remote only participation and ‘hybrid’ Tutorials and Workshops. The Opening Plenary Session (1st of July) and the parallel sessions that will take place 2-4 July will run as ‘hybrid’ events (i.e., allowing both 'in-person' and remote participation options for presenters and participants). Detailed information about the mode of operation for each part of the conference is available through the Program Overview at the Conference website.

The recipient of the 'HCI MEDAL FOR SOCIETAL IMPACT' for 2024 and Keynote Speaker will be Vicki Hanson (past President of ACM and current ACM’s Chief Executive Officer).

The best contributions will be awarded! The best paper of each of the HCII 2024 Thematic Areas / Affiliated Conferences will be given an award. The best poster extended abstract (in the form of a short research paper) will also receive an award.

Workshops, to be organized as hybrid events, are intended to foster discussion and exchange of ideas on hot topics in the broader field of HCI. Workshop participation is complimentary for all registered Conference participants.

The Student Design Competition gives to College and University students of all grades an opportunity to present their design idea, by submitting an abstract and a video clip (up to 5-minutes). Three awards will be selected by an international jury (GOLD - $1,000; SILVER - $500; and BRONZE - $250).

The Conference Proceedings will be published by Springer in a multi-volume set. Papers will appear in the LNCS and LNAI series, while poster extended abstracts in the form of short research papers will be published in the CCIS series. All volumes will be available on-line through the SpringerLink Digital Library, readily accessible by subscribing libraries, and indexed by a number of services, including: CPCI, part of Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science; Scopus; EI Engineering Index; ACM Digital Library; Google Scholar; DBLP, etc.

4th of July 2024. As the last day of the conference coincides with the US Independence Day, a traditional BBQ and appropriate festivities will be organized; details will be announced on the HCII2024 website in due course.

HCII 2024: Poster proposals submission - deadline: 19 January 2024

Posters constitute short research papers, reporting scientific results or professional news. Present your novel ideas in a simple, concise and visually appealing manner. Accepted submissions will be included in the Conference Proceedings to be published by Springer in the Computer and Information Science (CCIS) series.

Prospective poster authors should submit their abstracts (300 words), including the essence of the planned presentation, by 19 January 2024.

HCII 2024: Distinguished Tutorial by Ben Shneiderman

Monday, 1 July 2024
“Generative AI: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility”

By: Ben Shneiderman
Dept. of Computer Science & Human-Computer Interaction Lab
University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA

Abstract: Generative AI Tools, like ChatGPT, Bard, and Midjourney, provide powerful features for users, but also bring substantial dangers. Generating text, answering questions, summarizing documents, and writing code are common text-based applications, complemented by multimedia images, videos, songs, and speech. Generative AI products are often impressive, but sometimes troubling. Potential dangers include errors from “hallucinations”, biased statements, violations of privacy, and copyright infringement. Can these dangers be prevented or mitigated sufficiently to bring commercial success beyond the initial bubble of excitement? This tutorial will address these opportunities and dangers, focusing on applications in education, medicine, and creative industries. We will focus on how HCI researchers and user experience designers can develop control panels that enable users to get what they want more easily and more often. The guiding principles stem from human moral and legal responsibility for the uses of technology. For users, the message is: Generative AI is powerful so learn to use it; Generative AI is flawed, so be careful.

* This Tutorial will be offered gratis to remote conference participants
